Partnerships and projects

At the ICM, we believe in the power of partnerships. Our projects and partnerships are rooted in the ICM vision of achieving a world where every childbearing woman has access to a midwife’s care for herself and newborn. Through our partnerships, we make our vision a reality.

We work with like-minded partners to improve Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health globally and accelerate the global progress of achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

As the global voice for midwives, we utilise our unique position and work closely with local midwives’ associations to deliver innovative solutions with our global partners. Our partnerships support us to strengthen midwifery globally, regionally and locally and deliver equity, quality and leadership in line with our triennial strategic direction.

All our in-country projects include activities to build the capacity of our member associations. 

Over the 2017 – 2020 triennium our projects have supported midwives by: 

Building 

  • Capacity of midwives’ associations in Mexico; with the MacArthur Foundation
  • Networks and resources for midwives providing consultancy services; with Johnson and Johnson and UNFPA
  • ICM’s Midwifery Education Accreditation Programme (MEAP); with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Online midwifery education resources for pre-service education; with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and UNFPA
  • ICM’s Global Midwifery Competency Assessment Tool; with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Strengthening 

  • Pre-service midwifery education through competency-based education of midwife teachers, mentoring, and curriculum development in Cote d’Ivoire, Comoros and Madagascar; with the Sanofi Espoir Foundation
  • Midwifery services and health systems; with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Respectful care by midwives to women and their families, and to each other; with the New Venture Fund and UNFPA
  • Technical skills of midwives in life-saving interventions (Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Survive) in Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Tanzania; with Laerdal Global Health

 

 

Developing 

  • Leadership skills of young midwife leaders; with Johnson and Johnson
  • Advocacy skills of midwives to raise the profile of midwives in their countries, to inform the public and to influence policy makers; with UNFPA and the New Venture Fund
