Midwifery Association of Zimbabwe Demands Fair Wages and Protection Against COVID-19

From the 18th of June 2020, health care workers in Zimbabwe have been increasingly withdrawing their services from Government public health institutions demanding a US dollar based salary (in the face of growing economic challenges and failure of the local currency) and protection against COVID-19. Midwives, who are currently employed by the Government as nurses, have been withdrawing their services. Regrettably the Government has not had meaningful engagement with health workers which has resulted in significant crippling of midwifery services. Middle-level managers and student midwives have been the ones offering emergency midwifery services at the major hospitals and are increasingly complaining of fatigue.

ZICOM (Midwifery Association of Zimbabwe) urgently call on their government and other stakeholders to find a solution to the current impasse in an effort to restore midwifery services.
