I hope you love our new website as much as I do. I am excited about the possibilities of improved communication; the online space - as a platform of exchange with you our members foremost, and with all of our stakeholders and partners. And also for the potential it offers for advocacy, as the website and related social media channels offer so many new ways to communicate – in real time, in a personal way, in a multi-layered way with words, images, videos….Best of all we can link up to progress all sorts of collaborative initiatives in an easy to organise and resource effective way.
As ICM President I am committed to pursue , securing women’s right and access to midwifery care through the continuum of childbirth, and supporting our members across the world to do the same in each of their countries and areas of influence.
This year’s International Day of the Midwife on May 5 is coming up fast and we have lots of ideas on how we can connect together, and ask the world to focus on the role of midwives and midwifery.
Now it is hard to believe that 2013 is here and as well as the International Day of the Midwife, it is only 17 months to the 30th ICM Triennial congress in Prague.
The Scientific Committee and Host Planning Committee are busy with preparations for Congress. Many midwives are planning to submit abstracts. The ICM Board and staff are reminding midwives to register and encouraging new participants to attend. We are reminding other stakeholders of the benefits of attending Congress such as ICM’s longstanding partners; UN agencies UNFPA and WHO, and ICM Donors the Dutch and Swedish Development Agencies.
One of the best aspects of attending Congress is the networking, sharing and connections of so many midwives joining together from across the world. I urge you all to try and attend – and to consider how to extend the professional collegiality you will enjoy – into how when you return home, you can play your part in advocacy to champion our work.
Meanwhile please enjoy using your new ICM website with all its new facilities for connecting and information exchange. We would love to know how you find it!
